with only insurance matters continued
to gain momentum.
By 1900, the Ukrainian National As
sociation had won for itself the recogni
tion of being the defender of Ukrain
ians in the diaspora as well as the
champion of freedom and independence
for Ukraine, their homeland. The early
effectiveness of the Association's ef
forts along these lines was hampered
somewhat by the presence of Russo-
philes among the membership, but this
situation was corrected at the seventh
Convention held in 1902 by simply out
voting the dissidents and once and for
all setting Soyuz on a straight and un
wavering Ukrainian patriotic course.
The history of the first twenty years
of Soyuz can be regarded as a record
of trial and error. At the very begin
ning, experience, formal knowledge and
funds were lacking. Language and new
world customs presented difficulties.
Disagreements and confusion stemming
from ignorance were commonplace. Un
certainty even prevailed as to the cor
rect name of the new organization.
Though "Shche Ne Vmerla Ukraina"
was sung at the conclusion of the Con
vention in 1894, "Rusky" or "Little
Russian" continued to be used in the
official title of Soyuz until 1914. This
was indeed an era that tried men's
souls. I t had to be proven that young
immigrants with a common heritage,
but emigrating from different political
states, could successfully establish and
manage a national organization in A-
merica for their own benefit, the bene
fit of their families, and their rightful
homeland.
The answer was provided by the re
ports and statistics presented at the
13th Convention in Buffalo, N.Y., in
1914. Membership had grown to over
25,000. Assets exceeded a quarter of a
million dollars. Hundreds of thousand
of dollars had been paid in death bene
fits. And all of this was done without
the slightest evidence of financial scan
dal in any Soyuz activities, a more
than major accomplishment in that era
