are determined not to repeat the political mistakes of their forefathers.
Citizens of all ages and backgrounds participate in major gatherings and
social reawakenings such as the 500th anniversary of the founding of
Sich, or the spiritual revival in Kolomyia which drew an orderly and
ecumenical throng of some 100,000 in July.
Most important, this reawakening is spreading. Supported by a broad
tolerance for differing views and beliefs, the Rukh inspired revolution is
moving east. Electrified by such live televised scenes of a young student
debating the head of the Ukrainian parliament during a legislative
session, the far eastern oblasts are likewise becoming aware of their
Ukrainian past. Even in Sumy oblast the blue and yellow flag has
officially replaced the odious red banners. Thus far, there is no aimless
drifting on the part of those who want change.
